- San Francisco, CA--22-Sep-91:
- FWB, Inc. of San Francisco, California today began shipping its long-awaited
- Hard Disk ToolKit™ SCSI utility software for Macintosh.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit is a set of professional tools for managing SCSI storage
- devices on the Macintosh. It works with all brands and models of SCSI hard
- drives, optical drives and removable drives. Hard Disk ToolKit consists of
- seven modules that are easy to use, yet offer the power and flexibility
- demanded by serious users.
-
- Because Hard Disk ToolKit doesn’t require users to reformat their drives, it’s
- an easy way to upgrade installed drives to full System 7 compatibility. Many
- users find that their existing disk driver software and utilities are
- incompatible with System 7, or do not fully support Apple’s new operating
- system. Hard Disk ToolKit is System 7 savvy, and lets users easily upgrade to
- state-of-the art software to match their new OS, without having to reformat
- their drive. Hard Disk ToolKit supports Virtual Memory, 32-bit Addressing, and
- Balloon Help under System 7.
-
- “It’s simply the ultimate SCSI utility software. Nothing else on the market
- comes close to providing the ease of use and high level of functionality that
- Hard Disk ToolKit delivers.” said Steve Goodman, FWB’s vice president of sales
- and marketing. “With full support for all brands, makes and models, and the
- best error checking and correction scheme available, virtually all Mac users
- can take good advantage of Hard Disk ToolKit’s incredible power and range of
- features.”
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit delivers enhanced performance with “hand-tuned” SCSI drivers
- that improve user productivity by increasing the speed of SCSI drives. All
- seven modules of the program fully exploit the new features of System 7 and
- SCSI-2. Hard Disk ToolKit’s 250 page documentation includes over 100 pages of
- easy to understand, detailed reference material covering all aspects of hard
- drive operation and the SCSI interface, as well as a comprehensive user’s
- guide, glossary and index.
-
- In addition to standard hard disk utility functions such as formatting and
- installing drivers, Hard Disk ToolKit adds advanced features such as flexible
- partitioning, impenetrable security, comprehensive diagnostics, drive control,
- and precise benchmarking. All SCSI drives can be installed with Hard Disk
- ToolKit, minimizing incompatibilities and eliminating down time caused by
- inferior software.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit is ideal for system and company-wide standardization. A
- single convenient program will eliminate compatibility, interchange, and
- support problems. Corporate and institutional managers will benefit from the
- fact that Hard Disk ToolKit is a universal utility that works with all SCSI
- disks—A single, powerful software package can now be used to manage all drives
- at site, providing a consistent interface among many machines.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit allows users to subdivide disks into multiple volumes (or
- partitions). Users can configure partitions to mount automatically at startup
- or to mount later on command. Unique driver-level password protection secures
- individual partitions without making the entire disk inaccessible to others.
- Partitions can be write-locked to prevent virus infections and unauthorized
- tampering with public files. Partitions can also be further secured with two
- levels of data encryption. Hard Disk ToolKit guides users through partitioning
- with an intuitive user interface, and online help is always available under
- System 6 or 7.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit provides an unprecedented level of support for removable
- media, allowing users to swap cartridges in removable drives, including
- erasable optical disks, without restarting. FWB’s exclusive on-the-fly error
- correction ensures iron-clad data security. Users can work with removable disks
- just like floppies: dragging the cartridge into the trash to eject, replacing
- it with a new one (even ones with different block sizes), and mounting the new
- cartridge to the Desktop.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit consists of 7 modules:
-
- HDT Primer™ formats and configures multiple drives from various manufacturers
- with a true low-level format operation that customizes over 10 critical drive
- attributes. With FWB’s exclusive support of extended block sizes, users can
- increase both the capacity and transfer rate of their drives. Apple formatted
- hard drives will increase by 1 to as much as 10 MB in usable capacity.
-
- After evaluating a drive’s performance characteristics, HDT Primer installs the
- appropriate drivers for maximum performance and data security. These drivers
- support customizable drive icons, on-screen activity indicators, full data
- verification, and will even remap bad blocks automatically on-the-fly.
- Removable drive support eliminates cartridge interchangability problems.
-
- Hard partitions conforming to Inside Mac V for storing different projects,
- applications, startup System Folders (e.g. System 6 and 7), or operating
- systems (e.g. A/UX®) are easy to create. Partitions can be auto-mounted,
- password-protected, read-only protected, copy-protected, encrypted and
- expanded, all without data loss.
-
- HDT Primer incorporates password protection into the low-level driver, unlike
- other “security” programs that are layered on top of the System. Nothing, not
- even INITs or debuggers will load before the correct password is entered.
- Drives can be configured to not only be unbootable, but completely inaccessible
- without the password.
-
- Macintosh managers who spend a lot of time configuring new systems will be able
- to quickly duplicate drives, without artificial throughput limitations, at the
- highest possible speed with FWB’s exclusive SCSI Copy feature. SCSI copy
- performs a high speed copy at a purely SCSI level, entirely bypassing the Mac’s
- File Manager. Drive images can be saved as a disk file, transferred, and
- restored, even across a network.
-
- Users can detect and prevent media errors before data loss occurs. A historical
- defect log is kept to maintain accurate error counts over time, even with head
- drift alignment problems. Over fifteen easy to use diagnostics can even test a
- drive’s controller and its RAM.
-
- HDT World Control™ allows customization of previously inaccessible microcoded
- parameters for improved performance and functionality. Over 150 different
- SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 parameters are supported. Onboard caching and prefetch can be
- enabled and customized to suit particular applications. Error and verification
- settings can be optimized for increased reliability. Specification and
- geometric attributes of drives, such as the number of heads, cylinders,
- sectors, RPM, etc. can be viewed easily. Access and full control over defect
- lists and error handling/correction is provided. Control spare defect
- allocation. Advanced diagnostics and vital information of new SCSI-2 devices is
- also easily accessible.
-
- HDT Prober™ is a cdev (Control Panel Device) that allows users to easily check
- whether a device is online and determine the make, model, and revision level of
- all devices in their system. It can conveniently mount drives that have just
- been powered-on or that had previously been unmounted, as well as display
- information to determine a drive’s status and data integrity. Cabling and
- software problems can be quickly diagnosed.
-
- HDT Extension™ is an INIT that loads drivers for removable drives which don’t
- have media present on bootup. Removable drives will mount automatically when
- media is inserted. HDT Extension can be custom configured to wait for slower
- SCSI devices to mount. All aspects of delay and device scanning can be adjusted
- to eliminate time consuming SCSI bus scanning.
-
- HDT BenchTest™ accurately measures transfer rates, seek times, access times,
- and many other drive characteristics. These precise tests are not artificially
- skewed by caching or other external factors and can be used to help fine-tune
- drive performance parameters for any configuration. Benchmark results are
- stored in a library for easy reference to compare them against specifications,
- historical favorites, or other drives. These reports can be printed out or
- exported to other applications for further analysis or graphic representation.
- BenchTest is fully compatible with hard drives, optical drives, CD-ROM drives,
- network volumes, floppy drives, and even RAM-disks.
-
- HDT LightShow™ is an easy to use, yet sophisticated I/O indicator that
- graphically displays disk access, and even shows floppy drive activity. This
- feature is unique in its use of color icons and even has an option to indicate
- which SCSI ID is reading or writing.
-
- HDT Util™
- Allows users to protect and unprotect files, folders and volumes. It also
- provides a quick way to increase system application memory and heap size, and
- other critical system attributes.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit requires a minimum system configuration of a Mac Plus with 1
- MB of RAM and a SCSI hard drive.
-
- Hard Disk ToolKit is available everywhere Macintosh software is sold. Its list
- price is $199.95. Special value 5-packs are available, as are volume purchase
- and site licensing terms.
-
- FWB, Inc. has been developing mass storage and backup products specifically for
- Macintosh since 1984. Current products include Hammer hard drives, HammerDisk
- optical and removable drives and HammerTape and HammerDAT tape backup systems.
- FWB’s products have been consistently rated as the best in their class by
- publications such as MacWEEK, MacUser, MacWorld, InfoWorld, PC WEEK, PC
